The microbial world impacts essential parts of the FDA mission to protect public health, including basic and applied research on microbial pathogens, surveillance and outbreak investigations, and educational outreach on microbial hazards.  Both fundamental and applied research are focused on pathogens that endanger human health and the safety of food animals.
