The DOE Genomics:GTL Program started in 2002 and incorporated the earlier Microbial Genome and Microbial Cell Programs. Building on them, Genomics:GTL is located in the Office of Biological and Environmental Research at the Department of Energy. Today, it is establishing a science base founded on microbial DNA sequence information to further the understanding and application of microbiology to DOE's mission areas of energy production, carbon sequestration, and environmental cleanup.

The Microbe Project is a project of the Office of Science & Technology
Policy and the National Science & Technology Council, Committee
On Science, Subcommittee on Biotechnology
